A Year After Typhoon Halong: Kipnuk Evacuees Remain in Anchorage

One year has passed since the initial flight of Typhoon Halong evacuees reached Anchorage, Alaska.

‘Kipnuk is still home:’ A year after Halong, evacuated residents still in Anchorage

One year has passed since the initial flight of Typhoon Halong evacuees reached Anchorage, Alaska. Survivors shared that the events are still fresh in their minds. Tristen Carl, a resident of Kipnuk who was forced to evacuate, remarked, “It felt like forever when we were floating down. Sometimes I have nightmares, but not as haunting as before. Lately, I’ve been dreaming about home, as if I’m really back there.”

Carl, still living in Anchorage, expressed that the city contrasts sharply with his hometown. He longs for the tranquility and simplicity of life in Kipnuk, as well as the closeness of family. “It can be lonely here at times,” he admitted. Carl has plans to return to Kipnuk to assist with recovery efforts and anticipates it could take over a year before he can rebuild his life there.
