In Anchorage, Alaska, U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) recently unveiled the Alaska Native Vietnam Veterans Land Allotment Fulfillment Act of 2026. This legislation strives to honor the commitment made by the federal government to Alaska Native Vietnam-era veterans by allowing for more federal lands to be selected for allotments.
The proposed bill seeks to unlock around 3.7 million acres of National Wildlife Refuge System lands identified as suitable in 2020 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Additionally, it mandates the Forest Service to recognize further lands within Alaska’s national forests that could be available for these allotments. This initiative aims to ensure that Alaska Native Vietnam-era veterans and their heirs can access federally managed lands, particularly in Southeast Alaska, where they historically have had limited opportunities.
