ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Trump administration revealed a new rule on Thursday allowing seismic surveys, well drilling, and winter ice road construction on federal lands in Alaska’s western North Slope to proceed without individual environmental assessments. This rule, issued by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), grants a categorical exclusion aimed at expediting the permitting process for exploration in the National Petroleum Reserve.
Kevin Pendergast, the BLM’s Alaska state director, stated that this move builds on decades of experience in evaluating the effects of exploration in the reserve, asserting that it will help locate energy resources more efficiently while benefiting Alaskan communities. However, environmental advocates have criticized the decision, claiming it undermines public oversight and risks ecological damage in the Arctic. Scientists have raised concerns about potential adverse effects of exploration activities on the region’s environment, including threats to wildlife and water resources.
