ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – This month, the Last Frontier Honor Flight conducted its biannual event, enabling veterans to embark on an all-expenses-paid journey to Washington, D.C. since its inception in 2013. The program’s mission is to honor veterans through visits to iconic monuments, providing them with expressions of gratitude that might have been missed previously.
Departing from Anchorage on October 6, a group of 22 veterans explored various sites, including the U.S. Navy Memorial Plaza. U.S. Navy veteran Allan Howard reflected on the emotional significance of seeing the memorial, as he was able to pay tribute to a fallen community member. Fellow U.S. Army veterans Ken and Sandy Schulz, who met during their service in Vietnam, shared their reflections on the trip’s impact, emphasizing the recognition they finally received upon their return. The veterans were greeted warmly at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport on October 10, where they were met with bagpipes and enthusiastic supporters, making the homecoming a deeply moving experience for all involved.
